5 days in and loving being barefoot. No problems other than blisters. Time is the best its ever been 8:35 pace for 1.5 miles. Half of it bare. Bought my vibram sprints today. Looking to get back out there tomorrow.

Hey, good luck! I know my form was pretty decent before looking into the chi and pose running forms but they really helped me make big strides quickly in locking everything down. As long as you're trying you're doing good. I wish my local high schools track was decent, it's really abhorrent. At a local 10k a week or two ago the last 1/8 of a mile was on it and it was like old, broken up blacktop. There was only one safe lane to run on. You'll be fine, give it a little more time to develop and you'll get that Marathon soon enough.

ultimate Russell, thanks for the advice. I think i am just going to back off a little and go very slowly to build up. I also think i am going to go to the local high school track and go completely barefoot while i work on my form. I have also ordered the chi running and chi walking dvd's and i am hoping that will help as well.

Well all I can do is speak from my own experience. Before I really started to get into minimalist footwear like the Five Fingers I started by dropping down to a cushioned racing flat, the Nike Lunaracer 2. I had a lot of problems with the shoe but that's beside the point. Also about this time I started to really make an effort to run with good from and started studying Chi and Pose running to use as a base for my transition to fully barefoot. And yeah, for several weeks I had sore crampy calves, but you just gotta work through it. I drink a lot of water and that seems to help. But for example, this Saturday I ran 15 miles with a combination of Five Fingers and Barefoot, and then piled another four barefoot miles on top Sunday. So even after working barefoot training and form drills for 3 or 4 months I'm still getting a little sore and crampy from time to time. If it was me, I'd say running a marathon in my Five Fingers or barefoot this year would be out of the question. I do plan on doing a half marathon in my KSO's in November and a 5 mile trail race in them in October and I'll see how I feel. My goal is to run a either a trail marathon or 30 miler next year. And yeah, like I said, I've been doing barefoot training for about 3 or 4 months and I'm up to about 5-7 miles depending on the heat of the surface. I myself am working to the 10-20 miles a day that Micheal gets, because the 5 or 7 miles just fly by without shoes. It's like a frickin party every run!

Here is some background: I am 44 and lost 60 pounds that I have kept off for 15 months. I want to run the Philadelphia Marathon in November 2010. I want to switch to barefoot minimalist footwear running after reading born to run, seeing the hbo real sports segment, and reading 3/4s, so far, of michael's book. I am using the galloway run/walk for the marathon. Since beggining the switch to minimalist footwear, i have a pair of VFF bikilas, i am having really bad calf cramps after running 2-3 miles in my new balance running shoes on the long runs. I think this is due to switching to a forefoot strike from an extreme heel strike on my old stride. I currently wear my VFF 4-6 days a week most of the day. after reading most of michael's book i am going to start running 1/4 a day 2-3 days a week and add a 1/4 mile each week for the rest of te summer and see if that helps with the calf cramping. I would like to do 2 runs during the week and keep up the long runs on the weekend with my shoes on bbut i am having so much difficulty with that now that my frustration levels are getting the best of me. I know michael and most of the posts on the site recommend starting completely barefoot but i live in the city and i am just not comfortable running barefoot due to the area i live in which is why i bought the VFFs. I wanted to get as close as possible to being barefoot. so i ahave a couple of questions:

1. what does micheal use for electrolyte replacement?
2. should i just give up on the marathon for this year?
3. what about barefoot/minimalist walking? I find that I heel strike hard when walking in VFFs.
4. use a foam roller everyday? has anyone had experience with this?

i used to love runing everyday in the marine corps and would like to accomplish 2 things with the switch to minimalist running - 1. i want to run an ultramarathon and 2. i want to get to a point where michael is at where i can run 10-20 miles a day with a smile on my face.

Russ,

Thanks for the input. I just completed day 2 of the new running. Got half a mile barefoot, then put on shoes for another mile. Feet are sore and blistered. But my knees and ankles (tore 3 ankle ligaments a year ago) feel great. Found that my posture and running style was more forefoot running than heel striking even at the end of the run. Really happy. My PT called and told me that even though he doesn't recommend it, that you can't argue with results. His advice, ease into it slowly to prevent achilles or other injuries. Hopefully getting my 5 fingers come payday to help with the blisters. Will keep checking in with results.

Hi James, I also have been through the P90X and Insanity ringer. I remember the first time I did Plyo in P90X and I thought that was hard, but the first Insanity workout had me questioning whether I would make it to the end. Hard stuff! The general school of thought from the experts like Barefoot Ken Bob Saxton is that if you want to run barefoot you should only run barefoot. Period. And while it may be heresy against Mr. Saxton I currently average 10-20 miles a week barefoot and run somewhere between 50-60 total miles a week. When I got to the point where I could do about 3 miles completely barefoot I would loop back to my house and put on a pair of Nike Lunaracer 2's, and I've gotta say it didn't go very well. The change, for me at least, caused a lot of problems. Suddenly cutting my body off from all the foot perception wreaked havok on my form and caused a lot of weird soreness and pain in the knees and ankles. I have recently remedied that by gett a pair of Vibram KSO's. And while they cut off sensory perception as well they're no where near as padded as the Nike's and don't have the big elevated heel. As far as strengthening your arches I think you'll find that most people say wearing orthotics just masks the problem and doesn't heal it, or make it stronger. Maybe you could start with walking barefoot for 20 or 30 minutes before a run, and then strap your shoes on and go out. I'm also a big fan of both Pose and Chi running and have found that they helped me tremendously when getting into barefoot running. I hope some of that helped or made sense. Feel free to ask any other questions you may have.

I'm researching the idea of barefoot running. Over the past few years I've lost some weight (50+ lbs) by cycling, swimming, light running, and other exercising. I recently finished P90X, and started in on another program called Insanity.

About a month into Insanity, I started having some knee problems. I couldn't do much at all, only cycling. I went to the PT and he said my arch flattens when I strike the ground and recommended insoles.

Here is my question: Can I barefoot run a short bit, then put my shoes on and run? Or does that completely defeat the purpose? I would like to get back to running about 2-3 miles 4-5 times a week. I currently can run about 2 miles with insoles and no pain, to give you some background.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Has anyone ever contemplated trying out a pair of EVO Terra Plana shoes for playing tennis? Is it possible that the lateral support afforded by specific tennis shoes outweighs the design benefit of this kind of EVO shoe?

Here's a blurb of the inventor:

"Vivo Barefoot were originally created by Tim Brennan, a professional tennis player and coach with the double luck of having an Alexander Technique teacher, Richard Brennan, for a father, and a massage therapist, Gloria Bianco, for a mother. When Brennan junior became injured, his parents advised him to learn to play in bare feet.

To protect his feet from outdoor tennis courts Brennan shaved slivers from the bottom of his trainers until the soles were ultra-thin. His injury cleared up and he used his experience to design a new pair of shoes. None of the major shoe manufacturers would take his design, so he turned to his friend, Galahad Clark, who had set up his own ethical shoe company, Terra Plana".

Hello all-Don't know about any of you (and that may explain why the lack of posts on this forum?) but I had to reset my password (7) times before I could get signed on... One day the password was fine and the next it wouldn't work. I sent an e-mail to admin a few days ago and haven't gotten a response. Anyone else having difficulties signing on?

Last week I decided to up my (every other day) runs from three to 4 miles. My first attempt went ok other than the bottom of my feet feeling like they were real close to developing blisters had I have gone just even a little further. My next 4 miler, two days after the first time I ran that distance, my feet felt better...

On one hand it seems the adaptation phase to running barefoot is a slow process that can not be rushed, but on the other hand, you don't have to wait very long to realize even a small amount of progress...

I hope to run a half marathon barefoot in Jan 2011, but I am going to hold off registering until November and evaluate then if this is even doable...

Ok, so this is probably a stupid question but I have started my barefoot transition and am now into week 3 of running barefoot. I am up to 1.3 miles as of today. Lately, I've been running in the injinji toe socks instead of completely barefoot because I have been running on pavement and noticed that this has been helpful in not causing any what I'll just call 'scuffs' on my feet or toes. Is this bad? Should I be completely barefoot or are there other folks out here that run in socks? I have liked this better than completely barefoot and I can see that my pads are starting to get 'squishy'....which is awesome btw but, was wondering if I should be even taking the socks off? The socks don't really provide any kind of support just mostly a little bit of protection to my feet. Any info. you can provide is appreciated!

Thanks, finished my 2nd (short) run with no blisters etc this time. Ran on the pavement near my home, as I think I may have ran on slightly rougher terrain than last time. I find it's quite a bit to take in at first what with trying to eliminate bounce, keeping upright, breathing etc. Can see it being easier to correct all that when increasing distance but will try to decrease bad habits with every run in the meantime. Anyway, feels good. Now off to work : (

I've been dealing with mild plantar fasciitis recently, and did a lot of searching for ways to treat it. Of course, rest was strongly recommended, and to the extent that it keeps me from re-commiting the errors that lead to PF in the first place, it was good advice. But what's really worked for me has been frequent stretching alternated with frequent massage. I've varied the types of both stretches and massage, including walking (gingerly) over rough surfaces to stimulate the nerves. For rough surfaces, I walked on both gravel and a very rough lawn (recently dug up and never leveled before seeding).
If you've tried these things, and found no relief, then I'd recommend a podiatrist who shares your goals for your feet, such as getting your feet stronger and orthotic-free.

I recently started barefoot running (1 week ago). Up until a few days ago all my runs have taken place in the morning before work. Well one day after work I came straight home, took of my shoes and headed out the door. I didn't run much further than last time (I am progressing slowly) but I assume due to my tender feet from being in shoes all day I ended up bruising my big toe and the ball of my foot (it's black and blue). I am not concerned about the bruising, I can work around that. My question is how long after being at work all day (9-5) and being shod should I wait before running after I get home? Any tips on how to keep my feet dry at work (I have to wear dress shoes)? Will being shod at work all day prevent my feet from growing tougher since they are always remaining moist? Any other useful information on this topic would greatly be appreciated. Finally just as a reference I was up to doing .75 miles barefoot before my injury. Thanks for the help!

Way to go Dan! Wish I had read their book before I slipped on a pair a super minimalist shoes thinking I would transition from them to pure barefoot. What a mistake that was... I'm into it now about 8 weeks or so and am running 3 miles every other day and looking forward to that day where I am back to my 10 mile runs. I know now this is going to take several months and a lot of patience on my part. I completely agree with Michael when he says countless times, "Let your skin be your guide," is the key to being a successful barefoot runner...

Ran another short one today, and discovered that 1.2 miles was way too far for me. Weird thing is, I only get bad blisters on my left foot, on the palm of my foot! I'm pretty sure I'm pushing off and scraping it up. My right foot is clean. I keep telling myself to relax and keep my knees bent and let the feet fall.

It's annoying waiting for blisters to heal. Right now I'm trying to run SHORT SHORT SHORT distances so I don't have to keep breaking out the hydrogen peroxide!!! That's a good goal I think!

I also played kickball tonight in minimalist shoes (water shoes $12 from the grocery store) and lemmie tell ya, my calves are tired!!! I would highly recommend water shoes to anyone who wants to just hang out in minimalist gear without shelling out the bucks for the Vibrams. Even just taking a walk with my blisters, I can still work those muscles with the water shoes.

Also, I've been running barefoot for 1 week, and walking barefoot as much as I can for 2 weeks and I think my toes already have a greater reach! I put on my Chuck Taylors and got some major pinkie toe pain/rubbing, which I find super encouraging! My toe spread is crazier than usual, which should come in handy when I do my Pilates.

:)

Hello,

Been thinking about barefoot running for months now. Read Michael and Jessica's book right when it came out (pre-order), was still scared to take the plunge. Finally I saw them speak last weekend and could wait no more so this afternoon I did about 150 yards on the street. Had to argue with the devil on my shoulder saying "run further, run further" but I won.

What finally put me over the edge? Quitting at mile 2 of what was supposed to be a 10 mile run before work this morning because my knee hurt.

So, we will see. It is the start of a big experiment.

Just wanted to say a quick hello, done my first run barefoot yesterday, felt great on finishing despite two minor blisters but trying to follow the advice of the book to the letter. Will hopefully venture out again in a couple of days.

John,

How often do you walk/run barefoot? Can you provide a sketch of a typical week?

Do you run with VFFs or completely barefoot? What surfaces do you run/walk on? What's your typical mileage with shoes?

Thanks,

My wife had plantar fasciitis and it got better after she started walking barefoot and in VFFs and eventually running short distances.

It doesn't go away overnight, but as your foot and arch get stronger, your foot reaps many benefits.

That seems like the general progression of things for most. Everyone expects their feet to be tender and need conditioning but it's sometimes an eye-opener how much additional conditioning the lower legs need when running barefoot as well.

My calves are super defined and bigger after only a month or so of very short runs barefoot, and they still get worn out on short runs. It's going to take some time but it'll be worth it when I can run for miles without worrying about shoes.

Cool. The trail might be rough but should be a really good test for your feet. Be prepared to not be able to go very far though.

Hello John, I'm no expert nor doctor, and am a beginner barefoot runner myself, but I have done my research and can share my knowledge and opinions with you. There are very few scientific papers about barefoot running, so for a physical therapist to recommend you go barefoot running to cure plantar fasciitis would be career suicide if you injure yourself on their prescription. Did your doctors rule out heel spurs already? And how is your foot's arch? I'm also curious, have you been barefoot running or walking? Do you know the correct running form? Is it at all possible that your heel stretching as prescribed was executed insufficiently? Did you try strengthening intrinsic muscles of the foot by picking up marbles or something with your toes? I'm just curious and also want to know some answers to those questions before I can give you a useful response.

the everything includes stretching and seeing a podiatrist? I guess if you ask about orthotics then you probably haven't seen a podiatrist yet, but anyway the popular idea is that barefoot running is a cure-all for running injuries, so maybe you can try barefoot walking and maybe jogging like one block and seeing if that helps? I've heard stories of people having a ton of pain from a run and then they decide to take off their shoes and run a little bit barefoot and suddenly all the pain is gone.

if you do barefoot jogging, focus on keeping back straight but upper body slightly leaning forward, land on midfoot instead of heel, and arms dont cross midline.

I’d like to get your opinions, perspectives, insights, advice, and experiences with chronic plantar fasciitis and transitioning into barefoot running. I am a lifelong runner who has had plantar fasciitis (p.f.) for over 2 years. Unlike other cases I have heard about where folks have suffered debilitating pain, my p.f. has given me mostly that nagging , persistent, dull ache and burn that never goes away. I have iced and stretched, exercised, worn orthotics, used the Strasbourg Sock, and gone to physical therapy (and more!) for most of the past 24 months, but the p.f. persists. Then 2 things happened: 1) I read Born to Run, and 2) the folks at physical therapy (really sweet and knowledgeable people, all of them) told me that I was going to be in those orthotics for life. In other words, their approach left no possibility for weaning myself off of orthotics ever – it just wasn’t in their thinking.

I had reached a crossroads – I could choose a well-meaning but, to my view, limited course of treatment that didn’t share much of what McDougall and others have been saying about the role of over-cushioned shoes and the weakening of our feet being at the root of our feet ailments – or I could work on strengthening my feet and working into barefoot running slowly but surely. So, I decided back in February to go with McDougall and the ever-growing barefoot running community and began focusing on making my feet stronger and thereby (I hoped) eliminate the p.f. allowing me to run barefoot in modest distances by the summer.

Well, summer’s here, and I’m still at it, a believer to the end but discouraged because the p.f. persists and I feel unable to really get going with running barefoot. I have been diligent and patient, gone slowly and followed the essential tips most b.r. sites mention to transition well and without overdoing it. Unfortunately, it isn’t working out as I’d hoped.

If any of you have any insights or words of inspiration, I would really appreciate them.

Lastly, does anyone know of any barefoot running clubs or groups in Connecticut ?

Thanks,

John in CT
